ECHA Urges SME REACH registrants to verify company size and documentation

Companies declaring themselves as micro, small, or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in REACH registrations should carefully verify that their company size has been correctly declared in REACH-IT. Incorrect declarations can lead to significant additional costs, including administrative charges.

Ongoing verifications by ECHA

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) continues to carry out verifications of company sizes declared during the registration process. If the declared company size in REACH-IT is smaller than the actual size at the time of dossier submission, registrants are advised to proactively correct this information through ECHA’s Helpdesk.

Avoid additional charges

Correcting the information before ECHA initiates verification helps companies avoid administrative charges. In such cases, registrants only need to pay the difference between the reduced SME fee and the correct registration fee. However, if ECHA discovers an incorrect declaration during verification, the registrant may be required to pay both the fee difference and an additional administrative charge of up to EUR 19,900.

Steps to ensure compliance

To avoid possible complications as mentioned before, companies should:

  • Review their declared size in REACH-IT.
  • Upload the necessary supporting documents.
  • Regularly check their REACH-IT account for messages and tasks.
  • Keep registration information and contact details up to date.
